Sanctuary — een ode aan Marokko

Sarah Edwards

Edwards studeerde Beeldende Kunst aan UC Berkeley en vervolgde haar opleiding met een focus op conceptueel ontwerp aan de Massachusetts College of Art. Ze kreeg een prestigieuze painting fellowship aan Yale University, waar ze haar expressieve stijl verder ontwikkelde. Haar werk is inmiddels internationaal te zien – onder meer via Saatchi Art – en maakt deel uit van privécollecties in de VS, Europa en Noord-Afrika.


Sarah Edwards creëert met verf een wereld die balanceert tussen droom en realiteit, tussen stilte en protest. Haar beeldtaal is krachtig, direct en gelaagd – gevoed door haar nomadische leven, maatschappelijke betrokkenheid en diepe liefde voor de natuur. Sinds enkele jaren woont ze met haar gezin in Marokko, waar ze Sanctuary Slimane mede oprichtte: een kunstenaarsresidentie en cultureel uitwisselingsproject aan de rand van Marrakesh. Deze plek voedt haar werk met lokale materialen, tradities en ecologische thema’s. In een tijd waarin ecologie en identiteit onder druk staan, biedt haar werk ruimte voor reflectie, verwondering en verbinding.

Adil en Najib

In dezelfde oase leiden Adil en Najib de keramiekstudio. Zij vormen, glazuren en stoken elke pot en schaal met vaste hand en diep vakmanschap. Traditie en vernieuwing gaan hier gelijk op. Voor deze tentoonstelling creëerden zij keramische dragers die Sarah vervolgens beschilderde. Zo reiken klei en verf over grenzen heen, terwijl de stukken toch stevig in de Marokkaanse aarde geworteld blijven.

Sanctuary toont hoe schilderkunst en keramiek elkaar versterken. De kleurkracht van Sarah’s doeken vloeit door in de subtiele huid van Adils en Najibs keramiek. Wat begint bij lokale klei en pigment groeit uit tot een universeel verhaal over aandacht, verbinding en de magie van samen maken. Sanctuary — an ode to Morocco

This exhibition brings together the intuitive, layered paintings of Sarah Edwards with the handcrafted ceramics of Adil and Najib from Sanctuary Slimane. The result is a tribute to Morocco – a country where making is not just an action, but a way of life.

Sarah Edwards studied Fine Art at UC Berkeley and continued her education with a focus on conceptual design at the Massachusetts College of Art. She received a prestigious painting fellowship at Yale University, where she developed her expressive and direct style. Her work is now exhibited internationally – including on Saatchi Art – and is part of private collections in the U.S., Europe, and North Africa.

With paint, Edwards creates a world that balances between reality and dream, between quiet observation and social awareness. Her visual language is bold, layered, and rooted in a nomadic life, deep ecological interest, and engagement with the world around her. She now lives with her family in Morocco, where she co-founded Sanctuary Slimane: an artist residency and cultural exchange project just outside Marrakesh. Local materials, landscapes, and traditions continue to shape her work.

Within the same oasis, Adil and Najib lead the ceramics studio. They form, glaze, and fire each vessel with steady hands and deep technical knowledge. Tradition and innovation go hand in hand here. For this exhibition, they created ceramic forms that were then painted by Edwards. Clay and paint meet in a shared process, crossing boundaries while remaining deeply rooted in Moroccan soil.

Sanctuary shows how painting and ceramics can enhance one another. The vivid colors of Edwards’ canvases flow into the delicate surfaces of Adil and Najib’s ceramics. What begins with local clay and pigment grows into a universal story of care, collaboration, and the strength of making things together.
